hey indiana

This one is a dandy.

There is currently a bill before the Indiana state legislator that would require anyone seeking to become impregnanted NOT through sexual intercourse, file with the sate.

Sec. 5. (a) A petition to establish parentage may be filed by an intended 30 parent. 20061258.001/84 (6) October 3, 2005 (1:24pm) (OBDAR)

1 (b) The intended parents must be married to each other, and both spouses must be parties to the action to establish parentage.

2 (c) An unmarried person may not be an intended parent.

That's right kids, non-married (read non-straight, read single women, read anyone but a Bibilical mom-and-pop with dysfunctional parts) would be barred from reproducing through technological means.

Am I kidding? No I am not

Indiana has a plethora of lovely laws like this. For example, according to the Indiana code, molesting a child is a class -d felony, but molesting your own child is actually only a misdemeanor. Go figure.

I heard, this morning, that they cut that part of the bill... I was in a car, on the way to a walking spot (i know-- lame), and I almost choked... --it was removed because, and I quote: "people were blowing it WAY out of proportion."

yep, good old indy -- attempting to deny the non-hetero-normative the (expensive) tools to baby making.

As problematic: As we all know, there are sorts of cystitis and endometriosis that require a woman receive hormone injections so that she can avoid repeated invasive surgeries. In Indiana (and probably any number of other states) those drugs are classified under reproductive drugs...and so many insurance companies deny them. I actually met a woman who had to keep having surgery every few years b/c IN doesn't require her insurance company to cover "reproductive therapy" drugs.

As an aside: I once lived in a state with a blue law that suggested that my living arrangements were "illegal" and "constituted a brothel" b/c 5 unrelated women lived in the house. I wonder if Indiana has that one too?
